BC: Taxpayers Pour South

Author: Jordan Bateman 2012/08/28

Need more evidence British Columbians are overtaxed? Two more pieces of data to consider:

1. British Columbians have the highest consumer debt load in the country—an average of $37,879. That’s up 2.9% year over year. When you live close to the financial edge, a Visa is often the only way to cope with an emergency.

2. StatsCan says Canadian overnight pleasure trips to the U.S. are up 9.9% this year. And overnight business trips are up 12.3%. Florida, New York and (the only border state) Washington are the top three destinations for Canadian travellers. Not coincidentally, Bellingham hotels are booming as Canadians slip across the line to shop.

The B.C. tax burden is strangling many taxpayers, so we are looking for any relief we can find. The U.S. will continue to be an attractive option.
